As Apple described it on stage, Visual Look Up in iOS 16 was picking up the ability to remove the subjects of photos from the rest of their background with just a tap. You would then be able to paste that image just about anywhere, from the Notes app to Messages. “Seems all right,” I remember thinking at the time. “But also pretty minor.” Well, since that time, I’ve had a chance to download the iOS 16 beta and test out many of the features Apple has outlined for my iOS 16 public beta hands-on....

Sources speaking to 9to5Mac (opens in new tab) have made several claims about how Apple will build on the current iPad 2021. Perhaps the biggest rumored change is that the new model, supposedly codenamed J272, will use a USB-C port instead of a Lightning connector. Moving to USB-C would be great news as it would bring the base iPad up to speed with the rest of the iPad family, which has slowly moved from Lightning to USB-C over the past several years....

As Apple’s support page (opens in new tab) explains, the error is pretty self-explanatory. “If your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro does not emit sound from the receiver when you make or receive calls, it may be eligible for service,” the page reads. Note that this doesn’t include the iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12 Pro Max — only the 6.1-inch handsets are affected. Originally available for two years after purchase, the support page has now been updated to say that handsets will be fixed free of charge for up to three years from the buy date....

The regular iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus may still have the notch, but Apple finally introduced a proper alternative to the punch-hole selfie cameras seen on rival Android phones. Here we are, 12 days before the iPhone 14 is officially unveiled, and the same rumor is gaining traction again. The introduction of satellite communications for the iPhone 14 was first mooted back in April, and the ‘Far Out’ spaced-themed invites certainly make it seem possible. But the biggest hint that satellite communications could finally be introduced comes not from Apple itself, but from rival companies in the telecommunication space, according to Tim Farrar, a consultant at Telecom, Media and Finance Associates....

A report from The Elec (opens in new tab) says that BOE is readying a new generation of LTPO displays with the intention of providing them for the iPhone 15. BOE already makes 6.1-inch displays for the standard iPhone 13, but the LTPO displays found on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are currently supplied by Samsung display. Apparently Apple’s already decided on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max display suppliers, too: Samsung exclusively for the 14 Pro and Samsung and LG together for the 14 Pro Max....

Just last week, we heard from TrendForce (opens in new tab), another industry analyst, that the iPhone 15 series will finally shift to USB-C ports and the Pro models will get a boost in RAM and will go from 6GB to 8GB next year. TrendForce also mentioned the use of a new type of main camera lens that Apple could adopt an upgraded 8 element (8P) camera. More elements in a lens could result in more light being absorbed into the lens and less distortion in images, which could be essential for wide-angle lenses....

We’ve heard rumors of an iPhone with titanium sides for some time, but they never came to fruition, with the likes of the iPhone 14 Pro Max sticking with stainless steel. However, if Apple makes an Ultra variant of the iPhone 15, much like the Apple Watch Ultra, then titanium could come into play. That’s because titanium has all the strength of stainless steel at 40% of the weight. As such, if Apple does indeed make an iPhone 15 Ultra, potentially to replace the Pro Max model in the iPhone lineup, then we could get a large screened phone that’s tough but also lighter than the somewhat hefty 8....

This isn’t to say the G25-10 is a terrific monitor. Measuring 24.5 inches with a native resolution of 1,920x1,080, some may find it distractingly small; the graphics lack sharpness and look blown out, even when the brightness isn’t maxed; and the lack of ports and other expected conveniences could well frustrate someone shopping for a more robust display hub. But if you can live with all that, the G25-10 is a reasonable choice at a much-more-than-reasonable price....

The so-called “world’s first high-resolution Stretchable display” is the result of two years of work, completed alongside a number of other South Korean partners. It’s built out of the same silicon material usually seen in contact lenses, and as a result is flexible and durable in a way that current folding displays are not. Fresh Geekbench 5 results (opens in new tab) spotted by 9to5Mac (opens in new tab) show not just big scores, but also an exciting increase in performance since the last benchmark discovered for Apple’s alleged next laptop. The machine, again called “Mac 14.6,” has a 12-core CPU with a slightly higher frequency of 3.68GHz, up from 3.54GHz in the first benchmark. It also again uses a huge 96GB RAM, beating the current 64GB limit in the MacBook Pro M1 Max....
